Three things to check on a yarn label
Fibre content, colour and dye lot, and care instructions: a short guide before you remove the band.
A yarn label is useful when buying more yarn or washing a finished project. Whether you knit or crochet, start by finding these three details.
Fibre names and percentages
Look for fibre names such as wool, cotton or acrylic. For a blend, check each percentage too. Keeping these details with the product name can help you identify the same yarn later.
Colour number and dye lot
A colour number and a dye lot number identify different things. Even the same product and colour can vary in shade between dye lots. Compare both before buying more; if no lot is shown, ask the retailer or manufacturer.
Washing and drying instructions
Read the drying symbols or instructions as well as the washing information. Follow the instructions for that yarn instead of deciding from its fibre name alone. Ask the manufacturer if a symbol is unclear.
